Crafting a Custom Rustic Wine Rack: A Journey of Handmade Decor

One of the things I love most about creating handmade rustic decor is that every order has its own story. Recently, a customer on Etsy ordered one of our Rustic Chunky Wine Racks. This project became a perfect example of how custom handmade work is often much more than simply building a product.
It starts with communication, attention to detail, and ensuring the customer gets exactly what works for their space.
Catching a Sizing Mistake Before Production
The customer originally reached out asking about standard wine bottle sizes and whether the smaller wine rack would work. When the order came through, however, the larger version had been selected.
Something didn’t seem right based on our earlier conversation, so I reached out to confirm before starting the build. Sure enough, it had been selected by mistake. I was able to adjust the order and refund the price difference before production began.
That kind of communication matters with handmade and made-to-order products. Unlike mass-produced items, every piece is built specifically for the customer. So, I always try to confirm details before cutting wood.
Starting with Raw Pine
For this build, I started by cutting all of the pine pieces needed for the rack:
4 side pieces
4 top and bottom pieces
6 inner rungs that hold the wine bottles securely in place

Before assembly begins, one of the most important steps is carefully marking the placement for each of the wine rack rungs on all four side pieces. Accuracy here ensures the bottles sit evenly and securely once assembled.
Building the Frame
Once the layout marks were complete, I glued and nailed the rungs into place on each side panel. After assembly:
The nails were buried.
Wood filler was applied.
The entire piece was sanded smooth.

This stage is where the structure of the wine rack really starts to come together.
Adding Strength and Stability
Next, I attached the top and bottom sections using wood glue and clamps to hold everything tightly while drying. Once cured, I drilled four 1/4-inch holes through the top edges into the side panels and inserted glued hardwood dowels. This extra reinforcement helps ensure the wine rack remains solid and sturdy for years to come.
Afterward:
Any remaining gaps were filled.
All surfaces were sanded progressively from 80 grit up to 240 grit.
That gradual sanding process helps create a much smoother finish while still preserving the wood's rustic character.

Custom Stain Matching for the Customer’s Home
The customer originally selected the Golden Oak stain. Before staining, I reached out one final time to confirm the colour choice. The customer then sent photos of their stairs and oak flooring. While the flooring was oak, the tones were softer and browner than a Golden Oak finish.
After reviewing the photos together, we discussed several stain options and narrowed it down to:
Weathered Oak
Aged Oak
Initially, Weathered Oak seemed like the best fit. However, pine can sometimes react unpredictably with lighter stains, especially when trying to achieve soft brown tones without blotchiness. After applying a pre-stain conditioner, I tested Weathered Oak, but it still appeared lighter and less rich than I wanted. Aged Oak, on the other hand, was slightly too dark on its own.
To create the right balance, I layered Aged Oak lightly over the Weathered Oak and then carefully blended and softened the finish using a 240-grit sanding sponge. This allowed the two stain tones to work together, creating a custom colour that landed between the two original options.
That flexibility is one of the benefits of handmade work. Sometimes achieving the best final result means adjusting during the process rather than strictly following a stain label.
The Finished Made to Order Piece
The final result was a warm rustic wine rack with rich brown tones that will better complement the customer’s existing oak flooring and staircase.

Every handmade piece teaches something. Projects like this remind me that craftsmanship is often about adapting, refining, and paying attention to the details that make a piece feel right in someone’s home.
At Rustic & Renewed Decor, every made-to-order item is handcrafted in Southwestern Ontario from locally sourced wood. Every build is crafted to be unique, functional, and built to last.
Why Choose Handmade Decor?
Choosing handmade decor means investing in quality. Each piece is made with care and attention to detail. Unlike mass-produced items, handmade decor offers uniqueness and character.
When you opt for handmade, you support sustainable practices. Reclaimed wood is often used, giving new life to materials that might otherwise go to waste. This not only helps the environment but also adds a story to each piece.
